Exploring the Foreste Casentinesi National Park

Foreste Casentinesi National Park is a protected wild area located in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Extended both in Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, the park is home to a rich flora and fauna including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and water animals that populate the lakes and rivers of the park.

The best way to explore Foreste Casentinesi is by following the many itineraries and paths that cross the entire park. There is a network of over 600 km of paths, whose different lengths and difficulties make them suitable for everyone. Each itinerary allows you to admire the features of the territory and to immerse yourself in breathtaking natural landscapes.

The paths can be followed on foot and this is certainly the best way to get in direct contact with nature and to closely observe vegetation, maybe even to spot wild animals! Some of the most popular routes are “Sentieri Natura”, perfect for those who are hiking for the first time. Along these routes there are several observation points with information boards that explain the characteristics of the surrounding vegetation and fauna.

Another way to venturing into Foreste Casentinesi is by bike, either mountain bikes or electric ones. Inside the park there are many places where you can rent electric bikes, suitable for beginners who want to bike through nature.

You can tour the park on your own or with guided excursions, accompanied by expert guides who will help you to move around safely and, thanks to their explanations, get to know interesting facts about Foreste Casentinesi.

A very unique way to explore the park is with donkeys or horses. There are several associations that organize excursions on horseback or on donkey, an alternative way to immerse yourself in nature, certainly appreciated even by the little ones!

During the excursions you can stop at numerous shelters scattered around the park: farmhouses, inns and huts where you will be welcomed with the well-known Italian hospitality, both if you want to stay for a few nights, but also to simply enjoy some good food.

One of the most enchanting places in the Casentinesi Forests National Park is certainly Ridracoli Dam and its lake. Built in the 80s, the Ridracoli dam supplies water to almost all of Romagna region and with its construction a huge lake was also formed. The lake can be explored on canoe or by boat, with a guided tour to discover the lake’s hidden corners lake. The whole area surrounding the lake is home to a luxuriant nature, that can be explored by following the various paths across the woods. Besides all of that, if you are lucky, you may witness the overflow of the dam, a truly unique and impressive sight!

Another place that you cannot miss is Acquacheta Waterfall, located on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany region. It is an incredible waterfall with a jump of over 70 meters that was also described by Dante in his “Inferno”.
